Scritto nel 1965, cinque anni dopo La noia, L'attenzione continua il discorso cominciato nell'opera precedente riprendendone il tema di fondo: l'inautenticita della realta. La struttura dell'opera e quella del romanzo nel romanzo, e la storia narra di uno scrittore e del romanzo che sta scrivendo, di cui e egli stesso il protagonista. Il centra della vicenda e un rapporto incestuoso, о che potrebbe divenire tale, tra padre e figliastra. II padre vive in prima persona la tentazione di infrangere il tabu dell'incesto, mentre lo scrittore si pone come lucido osservatore della tentazione stessa. Ma quando l'uomo si accinge a rivedere il diario che dovrebbe costituire la base del romanzo, si accorge di quantq poco esso rispecchi la realta che egli aveva voluto riprodurre. E quasi tentato di rinunciare a scrivere la sua opera, quando si rende conto che il diario stesso e gia un romanzo, non solo, come dice, "per i pochi awenimenti accaduti, ma anche e soprattutto per quelli che non erano accaduti affatto e che aveva sognato о inventato".
