Twelve-year-old Amir is desperate to win the approval of his father, so resolves to win the local kite-fighting tournament and prove that he has the makings of a man. His loyal friend Hassan promises to help him - for he always helps Amir. But this is 1970s Afghanistan and Hassan is merely a low-caste servant who is jeered at in the street, although Amir feels jealous of his natural courage and the place he holds in his father"s heart. Neither of the boys can foresee what will happen to Hassan on the afternoonof the tournament, an event that is to shatter their lives. After the Russians invade and the family is forced to flee to America, Amir realises that one day he must return, to find the one thing that his new world cannot grant him: redemption.

I'd like to say "thank you" to the real master of the word. "The Kite Runner" made me cry and smile many times. A real masterpeace, so sincere, so real, so moving and deep. It was a real pleasure, and it seems after reading that I knew the characters all my life, and I now just eager to reread it again and again. Such important themes and problems are raised (friendship and love, loss and discovery, betrayal and redemption, fathers - sons relationships, war in all its senses) and so craftfully given and solved. Though I am Russian, I wasn't wounded by character's attitude towards "Shuravi". Very interesting, detailed cultural overview. It was just like a journey to Afghanistan, with its smells, colours, sounds, people...Now the other Mr.Khaled books are first on my waiting list. TASHAKOR!

Let's read such books and stop to have wars! Because every nation deserves to live in peace, to be loved and respected. Really.
